What are the requirements for CSPO certification?
CSPO certification requires a 2-day course with no exam. Renew every 2 years with 20 SEUs and $100. Here's what you actually need to know.
Answered by Giora Morein, Certified Scrum Trainer. ThinkLouder has trained 55,000+ practitioners since 2015.
You need three things to earn your CSPO: complete a 2-day training course from a Scrum Alliance-approved provider, show up for all of it, and get your instructor's sign-off. That's it. No exam, no essay, no waiting. You walk out certified.
The Course Itself
The 2-day CSPO training is where the work happens. You're not memorizing definitions or grinding through practice tests, right? You're learning how to think like a Product Owner: how to write user stories that actually mean something to your developers, how to prioritize a backlog when everything feels urgent, how to talk to stakeholders without losing your mind.
Full attendance is mandatory. If you miss a session, you don't get certified. That's the Scrum Alliance rule, not ours. We've trained over 55,000 practitioners since 2015, and we've seen teams get real value from that two-day commitment because everyone's in the room together, working through the same scenarios.
No Exam Required
This is one of the clearest differences between CSPO and other certifications. You won't sit for a test. Your certification is awarded the moment your instructor signs off on your attendance. Some people find that refreshing. Others worry it's too easy. Here's the honest truth: the two days are the filter. If you show up, engage, and complete the course, you've earned it.
After You're Certified: Renewal
Your CSPO is valid for two years. After that, you'll need to renew it. Renewal requires two things:
- Earn 20 Scrum Education Units (SEUs) from approved training, conferences, or self-study activities.
- Pay a $100 renewal fee to Scrum Alliance.
That's straightforward. You don't retake the course or sit for an exam to renew. You just need to keep learning and pay the fee.
