Which Agile certification is best for your role?

It depends on what you do. If you're managing a team, the Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) is the standard. If you're owning the product, go for the Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO). Both cost $349–$549, include a 2-day course, an exam, and 2-year membership with the Scrum Alliance. Start with your role and career direction

Scrum Master track: You're facilitating sprints, removing blockers, coaching teams. CSM is the entry point. After 12 months in role, you can pursue the Advanced Certified ScrumMaster (A-CSM) to go deeper into coaching and organizational change.

Product Owner track: You're managing the backlog, talking to stakeholders, making priority calls. Start with CSPO. The Advanced Certified Scrum Product Owner (A-CSPO) comes next if you want to sharpen discovery and stakeholder management skills.

Neither role yet? CSM tends to be the safer bet. It teaches Scrum fundamentals that apply across teams, and Scrum Master roles are more abundant in the market right now.

What actually matters when you're choosing

Three things matter more than the cert name itself.

Training provider. Not all CSM courses are equal. A licensed Scrum Alliance trainer (like our Certified Scrum Trainers) will spend time on real team dynamics, not just slides. You'll get case studies from actual sprints, not theory.

Your team's context. A Scrum Master in a 6-person startup team has different needs than one in a 40-person enterprise program. The cert is the same, but the application isn't. Pick training that acknowledges that.

Cost and time. Budget $349–$549 for the course and exam. Add 2–3 hours per week for 4 weeks to study for the 50-question exam (you need 74% to pass). If you can't commit that, wait until you can. Cramming doesn't stick.
